How much of a tree can you prune without harming it?

Remove no more than 25% of the live crown in one season, and only 10–15% on a mature tree. Dead wood does not count. What is the 25% rule for pruning?

It is the working limit arborists use for a healthy tree: in one growing season, remove no more than 25% of the live, leaf-bearing crown. It is a ceiling, not a goal. The reasoning is energy. Leaves make the sugar that runs everything, including root growth and the chemistry that walls off wounds. Take a quarter of the leaves and the tree compensates from reserves; take half and it is in deficit, so it sprouts fast, weak shoots wherever it can. Those are the watersprouts you see on badly cut trees. The figure applies to the crown as a whole: removing one limb that held a fifth of the leaves counts as 20%, even though it was a single cut.

Can you prune a mature tree as much as a young one?

No. A young tree is mostly leaves and growth; it replaces what it loses in a season and closes small wounds fast. A mature tree is mostly wood it has to maintain. Its ratio of leaves to living tissue is lower, its reserves are relatively smaller, and its wounds are larger and take years to close, if they close at all. The working limit for a mature tree is 10–15% of the live crown per season, and many arborists remove only dead wood and one or two problem limbs on an old tree and call it a year. An eighty-year-old tree does not need reshaping; it needs its dead wood cleaned out and its structure left alone.

How big a branch is too big to cut?

Think in wound size. A cut under about 2 inches across leaves a wound a healthy tree closes in a season or two. Above 4 inches on a mature tree, the wound may stay open for years, the exposed wood dries and cracks, and decay fungi get in before callus covers it. Large limbs can still be removed when the reason is good, such as a limb that is dead, split, or over a bedroom. When a big limb needs shortening rather than removal, cut it back to a side branch at least a third of its diameter; that is a reduction cut, the correct alternative to topping. Making small cuts early is the whole point of pruning young trees: a 1-inch cut at age five prevents a 10-inch cut at age forty.

What happens if you prune too much?

Four things. First, watersprouts: thin, vertical, fast shoots from dormant buds along the remaining limbs, weakly attached and prone to breaking, which crowd the canopy and need pruning again within a year or two. Second, sunscald: bark shaded for decades is suddenly in full sun and cracks, killing the cambium in strips down the south and west sides of limbs. Third, a stall below ground: the tree cuts root growth to match its reduced leaf area and becomes more vulnerable to the next drought. Fourth, decay: many large wounds at once overwhelm the tree's ability to compartmentalize. A tree over-pruned once usually survives; one over-pruned repeatedly ends up on the dying-tree page, then in the removal queue.

Can I split a big pruning job over several years?

Yes, and for a neglected tree that is the right plan. Suppose a maple untouched for fifteen years has a rubbing co-dominant stem, dead wood throughout, and limbs on the roof, and fixing everything means taking off 40% of the crown. Year one: all the dead wood, which costs the tree nothing, plus the roof limbs and the worst rubbing branches, staying under the limit on live wood. Year two: the competing stem, reduced to a lateral rather than removed at the trunk. Year three: thinning and cleanup.
